Lilium 'Matrix', commonly known as the Matrix Asiatic Lily, is a compact, early-blooming perennial renowned for its vibrant red-orange flowers. This dwarf variety is ideal for containers, borders, and small gardens, offering a splash of color in early summer. Its sturdy stems and low-maintenance nature make it a favorite among gardeners.

Planting & Growing Conditions

  • Hardiness Zone: 3-9 (extremely winter-hardy and suitable for various climates)
  • Mature Size: 12-14 inches tall, 12-15 inches wide
  • Growth Rate: Fast
  • Sunlight Needs:
    • Full sun to partial shade (requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal blooms)
  • Soil Requirements:
    • Prefers moist, well-drained, porous growing medium
    • Slightly acidic pH: 5.8-6.4
    • Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils to prevent bulb rot
  • Spacing: 12-15 inches apart for proper air circulation

Watering & Maintenance

  • Young Plants (First Year):
    • Water sparingly until shoots emerge; increase watering as plants grow
  • Established Plants:
    • Maintain evenly moist soil, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings
    • Avoid standing water, as lilies do not tolerate wet feet
  • Mulching:
    • Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds

Fertilizing

  • First Year: No fertilizer needed at planting if soil is rich in organic matter
  • Mature Plants:
    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or incorporate time-release fertilizers into the growing medium prior to planting
    • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can promote excessive leafy growth at the expense of blooms

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Best Time to Prune: After flowering
  • How to Prune:
    • Remove spent flowers to prevent seed formation and redirect energy to the bulb
    • Allow foliage to die back naturally; do not remove green leaves, as they contribute to bulb nourishment
    • Cut back dead stalks in late fall or early spring to maintain garden tidiness

Flowers, Foliage & Seasonal Interest

  • Bloom Time: Early summer
  • Flower Color:
    • Bright red-orange blooms with a satiny finish
    • Upward-facing flowers, ideal for viewing and cutting
  • Foliage:
    • Narrow, glossy, dark green leaves arranged in whorls along the stem
    • Compact, sturdy stems that do not require staking

Pest & Disease Management

Resistant to: Deer and rabbits

Common Pests:

  • AphidsCan cause leaf curling and transmit viruses
    • Solution: Apply insecticidal soap or introduce natural predators like ladybugs
  • Fungus Gnats and Shore FliesCommon in moist growing mediums
    • Solution: Maintain proper sanitation and avoid overwatering

Common Diseases:

  • Root Rots (Pythium and Rhizoctonia)Occur under wet conditions
    • Solution: Ensure well-drained soil and use preventative fungicide drench applications if necessary
  • Botrytis (Gray Mold)Can develop in humid conditions, especially on dead flower petals
    • Solution: Provide adequate air movement, avoid overhead irrigation, and apply preventative fungicide applications during blooming

Winter Protection

  • Cold-Hardy: Zones 3-9
  • Mulching:
    • In colder regions, apply a layer of mulch in late fall to protect bulbs from extreme temperatures
  • Container-Grown Lilies:
    • Move pots to a sheltered area or unheated garage to prevent deep freezing

Don't waste money on this one
Ordered in January 2026. Worked good the first few times. Now it just rotates around and around the can but doesn't cut anything. I'm so disappointed because it failed shortly after my return window closed.

Easy to use! No more hand cranking.
If you like the ease of an electric can opener, but don’t have room to store it or don’t want to drag it out when you need to use it, this is for you. I like a handheld can opener, but would get so frustrated trying to use it and turn the handle. This can opener is amazing and so easy to use. Just attach to can and push a button. It starts turning on its own and when it is done it stops. You lift it up and the lid comes off cleanly. It is rechargeable so need to worry about batteries. It tucks away in a drawer nicely. I bought my mom one too. She has arthritis in her hands so thought this would be perfect for her.

Smooth edges better than twisting
Works a lot better than the crank style and the counter top electric and you can use the lid to reseal the can if you don't use the whole thing.

Worked for only 4 months. Now produces metal shards. Dangerous
Pros: Can be used with one hand. I bought this to have after surgery that left me without use of one arm for a few months. The light blinks when you need to charge it. Only needs a 2-3 min charge for enough juice to open a can. Cons: IT QUIT CUTTING CORRECTLY AFTER 4 MONTHS. I now have to use both hands to hold it in place to get it to latch on to the can. It also requires a few rotations around the top to cut through the seal, resulting in METAL SHARDS! The metal shards are super sharp and almost invisible. I stabbed myself with one enough to draw blood. This is dangerous as the metal could fall into the food when pouring from the can.
